Nancy Dutra’s Debut Album! Pre-Order and Help Fund The C.D.

10 November 2011

Hello Friends,

The time has come for me to record my debut album. I have waited until it felt totally right and now with Les Cooper (Jill Barber, The Good Lovelies, Madison Violet) as the producer, I am ready and excited to lay my songs down and make a record.

But, to do this, I need your help.

Here is my story:

At the age of 24, I decided that I had to play music and that I wanted to do it for a living. The only problem was that I didn’t really know how to play the guitar, didn’t think I could sing and had only written three songs. I was working full time at The Globe and Mail (love the paper, don’t like office work) and had a pretty good salary but it wasn’t enough for me: I just had to sing. So, even though I had only just started to play guitar and write songs, I battled my life-long fear of singing in public and started playing a lot of open stages and gigs. In fact, one of my first gigs was opening for Ian Tyson -a surreal experience especially for such a new performer! Over the last few years I have played all over Toronto, played several festivals, toured Canada, played in Austin, TX and I have opened for David Lindley and Jesse Winchester in addition to Mr. Tyson. Also, I have taken song writing workshops with amazing writers such as Mary Gauthier, Darrell Scott and Kevin Welch. I have worked hard but I have also been very lucky. Oh, and in case you’re wondering: I no longer work at The Globe and Mail. I do still read the paper though.

But, I have never recorded an album. I want and need to do this now. This is where you come in. In order to record a professional C.D. I need to raise a minimum of $20,000.00. This will cover the cost of recording, engineering, producing, playing, mixing, mastering etc.. If you can help in any way – no contribution is too small- it would help me immensely. Pre-production has already started, recording will commence in early 2012 and the album should be finished with a release date slated for the first quarter of 2012.

My songs are ready and I, myself, am ready to make one of my biggest dreams come true. Specific information as to how you can contribute can be found below. If you can help me out, I would forever be grateful. If you can’t, I thank you for letting your eyes come this far.

All my best.

Fancily,

Nancy

Hello Friends,

On Saturday, April 2nd, I was lucky enough and so honoured to open for Sir Jesse Winchester at Hugh’s Room in Toronto.

For those of you who don’t know, Jesse Winchester is a beautiful songwriter and a gentle and powerful performer.  His songs are poignant, sometimes silly and they always cut to the core.  There is not a word or note that is wasted in his songs. Jesse Winchester is a songwriter’s songwriter.

In fact, two years ago I took part in a songwriting workshop in Nashville when Guy Clark -another songwriter’s songwriter- showed up as a surprise guest. Mr. Clark was asked whose songs we should study in addition to his own.  Guy Clark’s answer?  Jesse Winchester.

Nancy and Jesse

Jesse Winchester’s audience was as lovely as the man himself.  What a special night for me to open for someone whose songwriting I so admire.  Please take a moment to watch this video of Jesse performing on the Elvis Costello show ‘Spectacle’. You won’t regret it.

Hope you’re well.

Love,
Nancy

Welcome to my new website!

Things have been going great lately.  I recently came back from a trip to Austin, Texas where I played some shows, heard some great music and made some new friends who are keepers.  That’s what happens in that magical land.  Austin is a great town and you should go sometime.

I’m also gearing up to record my debut album with producer Les Cooper at the helm.  Les has done some great work with Jill Barber, The Good Lovelies, Madison Violet, Craig Cardiff and many others.  I am really excited to work with Les and get this project under way.  Speaking of which, I am going to need your help!  I will begin a fundraising campaign very shortly in order to raise enough dough to finance the record.  Donations, pre-orders, house concerts and fundraising ideas will be most welcome.

In April I am heading up north to Eabamatoong with a group of artists from The Arts Can Circle to deliver workshops in a school-setting.  This work is very meaningful to me as I enjoy working with kids of all ages and love watching them come alive when they create a piece of art.  Nothing beats seeing a kid smile when they’ve learned something new and their confidence is increased.  I really believe in the work that Arts Can Circle does. Check them out at http://www.artscancircle.ca/ .

In May, I will be doing a one week tour with the always charming Willow Rutherford and the itinerant bluegrasser/radio-host Allison Brown.  We will be kicking things off in Toronto then heading to Campbellford, Nappanee, Montreal, and Ottawa.  Please check the “Dates” section for more details.

There’s more to tell but I’ll save it for later.

Cheers,

Nancy
